Line-up
The band’s third album, Turn Back, marked an reversion to the classic sextet arrangement of the previous albums. It was a more powerful, constant effort with an edge that was stronger than Hydra. The more edgy sound of the album reflected the maturation of the group, with drummer Bobby Kimball’s greater proficiency on the drums, as well as a more confident, mature vocal delivery from singer Joseph Williams. By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The group’s fourth album, Old Is New was not a commercial success and vocalist Williams was suffering from laryngitis that affected his singing abilities. Hungate also returned to Nashville and Leland Sklar’s drumming duties were replaced by Shem Von Schroeck.
