Line-up
The band’s third album, Turn Back, marked a return to the classic sextet style of previous albums and was a stronger, more consistent effort with an edge that was stronger than Hydra. The more edgy sound of the album was a reflection of the maturation of the group and featured drummer Bobby Kimball’s greater virtuosity on drums, and a more confident, mature vocal delivery from singer Joseph Williams. David Paich’s keyboard playing was also more sophisticated, sharper, and less derivative on earlier efforts.
After touring to promote their album, the group recorded their Amsterdam live performance that was released on Eagle Records as a 2-CD set entitled Falling In Between. The group released a brand new studio album a few months after and embarked on a world tour promote the album. During this time keyboardist Greg Phillinganes filled in for Paich and bassist David Hungate left the group to spend more time with his family.
In 1998, Paich and Lukather started searching through old demo tapes and tapes to make a new record featuring songs that were never recorded before. The album was released as a double album titled Then and Now in 2001. It was the first album in the history of the band that did not include one single track with the word “A” in its title and it included one previously not released track, “Kari-Anne”.
By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity.
